8 AAPI-Owned Small Businesses You Should Know About

This May, we recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.

In the U.S. today there are over 2.8 million AAPI-owned businesses, employing more than 3.5 million people and generating $700 billion per year. Amanda, the founder of Mochi Kids, reminds us that this month “is a time to reflect on the contributions the AAPI community has made to the country. It’s also a time to celebrate the AAPI culture and show that American culture and history is so much more diverse than a lot of people think it is.”

Unfortunately, despite significant contributions to our communities and the economy, anti AAPI-hate crimes have more than quadrupled nationwide in recent years and AAPI entrepreneurs continue to face significant challenges, including discrimination and limited access to capital.

As Amanda shares, “AAPI-owned businesses have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, both economically, and because of racial bias. The AAPI business community needs support, especially if we want to see these businesses continue into the future.”

In addition to educating yourself about how to advance equity, justice, and power and end systemic racism and hate against the AAPI community, this month– and all year– you can also use your purchasing power for good, diverting your dollar away from mega-retailers and shopping directly with small, AAPI-owned businesses instead. “When someone supports my business I feel it so personally. It feels like they’re invested in me and my products. It feels like we’re family,” says Amanda.

Here, you can meet 8 of the incredible AAPI-owned brands we think you should know about,  and don’t forget: you can check out our AAPI-owned shopping guide or toggle on ‘AAPI-owned’ everytime you shop on goodbuy for even more small, AAPI-owned businesses to support all-year!
